La scorsa settimana siamo stati in Macedonia. Siamo stati a Ohrid, il paese Patrimonio dell'Umanità vicino alla frontiera albanese. Questo è un territorio che da tempo affascina scrittori di viaggi.

Oggi Debar (Dibra in albanese) è in Macedonia, però guarda a ovest oltre il confine con l'Albania. Fin verso la metà del XV secolo, l'antica Debar era in prima linea nel conflitto tra albanesi e le forze ottomane. È stata la prima città presa d'assalto da parte del leader albanese Skanderbeg quando iniziò la storica campagna militare di successo contro i Turchi nell'autunno del 1443. Quindi non è una sorpresa che una statua enorme di Skanderbeg è al centro di Debar, in modo da marcare la città come un luogo molto caro agli albanesi.

Tetovo

Poi abbiamo continuato a nord di Tetovo. È il centro del commercio e della vita politica di etnia albanese in Macedonia, ancora oggi circondato da frutteti di mele proprio come lo era nel 1937.

Da non perdere la moschea, sulla riva sud del fiume Pena, appena fuori dal centro storico, una festa di policromia civettuola. Interni stravaganti, riccamente decorati come "il più estroso vassoio da tè". L'edificio che ospita i vecchi bagni turchi sulla riva opposta del fiume è stato restaurato e ora è diventata una piccola galleria d'arte.

We journeyed through Macedonia last week. We stayed at the country's only World Heritage Site at Ohrid and then hugged the Albanian border as we travelled north through Debar to Tetovo. This is territory that has long fascinated travel writers.

Debar (Dibra in Albanian) during the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, ever championing the cause of her beloved Albanians. Today the town is in Macedonia, but it looks to the west over the border into Albania. Back in the mid-fifteenth century, Debar was in the forefront of the conflict between ethnic Albanians and Ottoman forces. It was the first town stormed by the Albanian leader Skanderbeg when he commenced his successful military campaign against the Turks in autumn 1443. So it is perhaps no surprise that a huge statue of handsomely-bearded Skanderbeg graces the centre of Debar, so marking out the city as a place that is very Albanian in demeanour. 

TETOVO

Then we continued north to Tetovo. The place is the hub of commerce and political life for ethnic Albanians in Macedonia, which today is still surrounded by apple orchards just as it was in 1937.
Don't miss the Tetovo's painted mosque that stands on the south bank of the River Pena just outside the Old Town. It is a feast of coquettish polychrome. Extravagant interior, lavishly decorated like "the most whimsical tea-trays." Tetovo's painted mosque is as wonderful today. The building housing the old Turkish baths on the opposite bank of the river has happily been restored and now serves as a small art gallery.
